Home Insurance

A Better Way to Insure Your Home

If a tree falls on your house, are you covered? Are you insured if your basement floods? What do you do if you have a claim? Most people probably aren't sure because they aren't experts. The following sections will help you make wise decisions about your home insurance.

Homeowners, Condominium and Tenant

Here is a summary of some of the coverage provided under our Select (Broad) Policy for your home and property. Since this is not your policy, be sure to check with me for complete coverage details.

  • Fire and lightning
  • Explosion
  • Falling objects
  • Oil leakage
  • Theft
  • Vehicle and aircraft impact
  • Some types of water damage
  • Electrical damage
  • Windstorm and hail
  • Collapse of building
  • Smoke damage
  • Property damaged in transportation
  • Vandalism and mischief
  • Freezer and contents
  • Glass breakage
  • Lock replacement
  • Riot

Our Deluxe (Comprehensive) Policy is the best way to be protected from almost any loss because it covers everything that's in our Select Policy and more. These include things like paint spilling on the carpet and even the mysterious disappearance of jewellery.

With a Replacement Cost Endorsement, available with some of our policies, your personal property is insured for replacement cost at today's prices, not its depreciated value.

Our policies also include Liability Coverage, including legal liability, voluntary medical payments ($2,000 limit) and voluntary payment for damage to property of others ($500 limit).

Some Commonly Asked Questions

Q.If both my recreational bicycle and my racing bicycle are taken during a break-in, am I covered for both?

A. Yes, both bikes are covered for up to $300 each, $500 if you have comprehensive coverage. This amount may be enough to cover your recreational bike, but you should talk to your Agent about special coverage for your racing bike as its value is probably greater than $300.

Q. What's the difference between "replacement cost" and "replacement cost guarantee"?

A. "Replacement cost" covers your personal property at today's value when you replace them (what your property is worth today, not the value when you purchased it). "Replacement cost guarantee" applies to your building. We pay the cost to repair or replace your building - even if the cost exceeds your coverage limit.

Q. What do I do if I have a claim?

A. Do what you can to minimize the damage, then call your Agent. If your emergency happens after office hours, call our Emergency Service number at 1-800-465-2667.

Q. During a break-in at my home, my car was vandalized and some of the contents were stolen. Do I have to pay two deductibles, one for my home and one for auto?

A. Good news. If you have both insured with The Co-operators, you only have to pay the higher deductible. It's one of the many benefits of being a multi-line client. We also offer a discount for clients who have more than one line of insurance with us. Your Agent can give you the details.

Q. I bought a stereo in the U.S. while on vacation. If it's stolen, is it covered?

A. Certainly. As long as you declared the item at customs and you have the receipt. Any imported merchandise that is legally documented will be covered. Remember to keep the receipt for every item you wish to insure.

Q. A neighbour looked after our house while we were on vacation and the pipes froze and burst. Are we covered?

A. Yes, because you had someone looking after your house, the normal water coverage applies (water damage as a result of ruptured pipe or other installation within your home). If you're leaving your house for more than four days, have someone check it daily or shut off the water supply and drain all pipes.
